Washing Machine Not Draining? Here's Why
Water sitting in the drum at the end of a cycle is a classic drainage fault — and one that's often resolved quickly once we find the blockage or failed part.
A washing machine that won't drain leaves a drum full of dirty water and clothes that can't be spun dry. The cause is almost always somewhere in the drainage path — pump, filter or hose — though it can occasionally be electronic.
Common causes
- Blocked pump filter. Lint, coins, hairclips and small items collect in the filter and block it. This is the single most common cause and often a straightforward clean-out.
- Clogged or kinked drain hose. A blockage or kink in the hose, or a problem where it connects to your plumbing, stops water leaving the machine.
- Failed drain pump. If the pump motor itself has failed, the machine can't push water out and a replacement is needed.
- Foreign object jammed in the pump. Small items get past the filter and jam the pump impeller, stopping it turning.
- Control board or sensor fault. Less commonly, the machine doesn't trigger the drain cycle due to an electronic fault.
Before you call: quick checks
With the power off, locate and check the pump filter (usually behind a small hatch at the front bottom) — have a towel ready as water will spill out. Also check the drain hose isn't kinked or blocked where it meets your plumbing. If it still won't drain, the pump may need attention.

Frequently asked
Why is water left in my washing machine?
Standing water almost always means a drainage fault — most often a blocked pump filter, a clogged or kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. Many of these are quick fixes.
Can I fix a washing machine that won't drain myself?
You can safely check and clean the pump filter and inspect the drain hose. If those are clear and it still won't drain, the pump or an electronic part likely needs a technician.
How much does a drain repair cost?
It depends on the cause — a filter clean-out is minor, while a failed pump needs a replacement part. We quote before any work, so you'll know the cost up front.
