Fridge Not Cooling? Here's What's Going On
A fridge that runs but won't get cold is one of the most common — and most urgent — faults we're called out for. Here's what usually causes it, and how we put it right the same day.
When your fridge is humming away but the food inside is going warm, it almost always points to one of a handful of faults. The tricky part is that several different problems produce the same symptom, so the cure depends entirely on a correct diagnosis.
Common causes
- Dirty condenser coils. If the coils at the back or underneath are caked in dust, the fridge can't shed heat and slowly loses its ability to cool. This is one of the most common — and most preventable — causes.
- Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor. If the thermostat isn't telling the compressor to run at the right times, the fridge won't hold temperature even though everything else works.
- Failed evaporator fan. This fan circulates cold air through the fridge. If it fails, the freezer may stay cold while the fridge section goes warm.
- Defrost system fault. A blocked or failed defrost system lets ice build up over the coils, choking airflow until the fridge can't cool properly.
- Compressor or refrigerant issue. The most serious cause. If the compressor is struggling or there's a refrigerant problem, the fridge loses its ability to cool. This needs a qualified technician.
Before you call: quick checks
Before you call, it's worth a couple of quick checks: make sure the fridge isn't packed so full that air can't circulate, confirm the temperature dial hasn't been knocked, check the door is sealing properly, and gently vacuum any visible dust off the coils. If it's still warm after a few hours, it's time for a proper diagnosis.

Frequently asked
Why is my fridge running but not cooling?
A running fridge that won't cool usually has a working compressor but a fault elsewhere — commonly dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, a defrost-system blockage, or a faulty thermostat. A technician can pinpoint which on site.
Is the freezer cold but the fridge warm?
If the freezer stays cold while the fridge section is warm, the most likely culprit is a failed evaporator fan or a defrost fault blocking airflow between the two compartments.
How fast can you fix a fridge that's not cooling?
We treat non-cooling fridges as a priority and can usually attend the same day. Because we carry common parts, many of these faults are repaired on the first visit.
