Fridges are never silent, but new or loud noises usually mean something needs attention. The type of sound is a strong clue to the cause.
A change in the sound your fridge makes is often the first warning sign of a developing fault. Catching it early can turn a major repair into a minor one, so it pays to act when the noise changes.
Common causes
- Loud buzzing or humming. Often a struggling compressor or a fridge sitting unlevel so it vibrates against the floor or a wall. Sometimes simply repositioning fixes it; sometimes it signals compressor wear.
- Clicking or ticking. Frequently the start relay clicking as it repeatedly tries — and fails — to start the compressor. This needs prompt attention.
- Rattling or vibrating. Usually loose components, items on top of the fridge, or the drain pan vibrating. Can also be a failing fan.
- Whirring or grinding fan noise. A worn evaporator or condenser fan motor, which can also affect cooling if left.
